Welcome to the second issue of Crossings for 2004. In this issue we return to our practice of featuring annually Australian Studies in one particular country or region. For this issue -- in a very timely fashion -- we are featuring Australian Studies in the United States of America.

Professor Ann Curthoys, Manning Clark Professor of Australian History at the Australian National University, has recently returned from the Australian Studies Visiting Professorship at Georgetown University, and from attending the annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand Studies Association of North America. Ann kindly agreed to guest edit this issue of Crossings and in particular to bring together a series of short essays and reports covering the varied activities of Australian Studies in the USA.

These include reports on the 'Australian Studies' Centres and teaching programmes, plus reflections by Australians who have recently held teaching posts in the USA.

The essays together provide a much-needed update on the international profile of Australian Studies and much important material for further analysing the complex international context in which we are all now operating. We need to remember American ideas as well as American dollars! Further US contacts can be found on the Australian Studies International Database (ASID) by clicking here. The next issue of Crossings will be co-edited with Dr Jenny Hocking from the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University.
