Welcome to the first issue of Crossings for 2004. In this issue we feature the third in our series of post-graduate essays, this year with essays by students from The Australian Centre at The University of Melbourne. Previous issues have featured students from Flinders University and the Australian National University.

We also continue or tradition of essays on Australian Indigenous Art, with an illustrated essay by Christine Nicholls on Abie Loy Kemarre, grand-daughter. Tim O’Dwyer, Brisbane lawyer, consumer watchdog, historian and holder of a Masters degree in Australian Studies (from Griffith University), contributes some fascinating up-dates on an episode close to the hearts of many Australians ‘of a certain age’ -- Australians involved in ‘the Great Escape’ during World War II.

There is a very strong calendar of Australian Studies conferences in the coming year, including the Australian Historical Association in July, the British Australian Studies Association conference in September, and the Chinese Association for Australian Studies in October-November.

As I will be overseas during the second half of this year, the two later issues of Crossings for 2004 will be guest edited by Professor Ann Curthoys (Australian National University, Manning Clark Professor of History, Visiting Professor in Australian Studies Georgetown University Washington DC) and Dr Jenny Hocking (Director, National Centre for Australian Studies, Monash University).
