Australian Literature Gateway

Australian Literature Gateway Opened
Dr Marie-Louise Ayres

The launch of the AustLit Gateway marks a new era for research and discovery in Australian Literature.

Did you know …
  • that Patrick White and his work has been the subject of over a thousand critical articles and reviews?

  • that Judith Wright's Woman to Man is the most anthologiesed poem in Australian Literature?

  • that Ivan Southall's children's novel Ash Road has been translated into over 15 languages?

  • that John Clarke has more pseudonyms than any other contemporary Australian writer?
The AustLit Gateway is a unique service offering answers to these and many more questions relating to Australian literature. AustLit offers libraries and researchers a single entry point to authoritative, constantly updated information on more than 40,000 Australian authors and more than 360,000 works of Australian creative and critical literature. AustLit has just been released for free trial until the end of 2001.

The AustLit Gateway is the result of a visionary collaboration between eight universities and the National Library of Australia. AustLit uses cutting edge technology and information management models to enhance resource discovery for the teaching of and research into Australian writers and writing. It contains detailed information for anyone interested in our nation's literature, including: students, teachers, researchers, librarians, publishers and authors. AustLit's development has been substantially funded by the Australian Research Council, and will facilitate new research through its innovative data model and depth of information. AustLit users can search across the entire database or can work within specialist subsets – including Drama, Multicultural and Indigenous Literatures, and Children's Literature. Users can access biographical information, rich bibliographic description and a developing body of full text using sophisticated search strategies, together with a Library Holdings facility based on links with Kinetica, the National Bibliographic Database. See http://www.austlit.edu.au for further information and free access.
